Opening of the New Klawer Hotel

A welcome addition to the northern road

From our own correspondent

KLAWER, Saturday.

A notable occasion in this district took place today with the formal opening of the new Klawer Hotel on Main Road, and from an early hour a lively gathering of townsfolk, neighbouring farmers and passing travellers assembled to witness the event.

The bright autumn weather lent itself well to the proceedings, and there was throughout the day a spirit of goodwill and expectation, for the opening of a hotel in a settlement such as Klawer is no small matter. It brings not merely accommodation to the traveller, but a place of gathering and refreshment to the district itself.

The new establishment stands prominently along the main thoroughfare, its position commanding attention from all arriving through the village. Built upon the Hertzhof property recently acquired by Mr Press, the hotel is substantial and well appointed, with broad frontage and accommodation suited both to the passing commercial traveller and to those resident in the surrounding countryside.

Today’s opening carries added significance owing to the unfortunate loss of the former hotel near the southern bank of the Doorn River, which, readers will recall, was destroyed by fire last year. The destruction of that building was keenly felt throughout the district, and many here spoke today with appreciation of the swift effort undertaken to restore such an important institution to the town.

By midday a small crowd had gathered outside the entrance, where greetings were exchanged warmly. Farmers from nearby holdings arrived by cart and wagon, reins looped over the rails while horses stood beneath the shade. Several travellers journeying north paused to inspect the new premises and were quick to express their approval.

Within the building there was an atmosphere of cheerful conversation and much admiration for the interior arrangements. The dining room was especially remarked upon, and many guests predicted that the hotel will become a regular stopping place for those travelling the route between Cape Town and the northern districts.

Mr Press, receiving well-wishers throughout the afternoon, was warmly congratulated on the completion of the enterprise. More than one resident remarked that the town has regained something of great practical and social value.

As the sun lowered across the valley and the late-afternoon light settled over the Doorn River country, lamps were lit within the new hotel and the sound of conversation carried into the road outside.

For Klawer, this day marks more than the opening of a building.

It marks the beginning of a new chapter for a district steadily growing in importance — and a fitting welcome to all who travel the northern road.
