Mr. John King Chosen to Lead the Newly Constituted Municipality of Durbanville

Durbanville, November 1901.

A new chapter in the history of Durbanville was opened this week with the formal establishment of the Municipality of Durbanville, the village having now been invested with full municipal status after several years under the administration of its Village Management Board. At the inaugural meeting of the newly constituted Council, Mr. John King was unanimously elected as the first Mayor of the Municipality.

Mr. King is widely recognised throughout the district as one of Durbanville’s foremost citizens. For many years he has been closely associated with the remarkable success of King Bros. Carriage and Wagon Builders, an enterprise that has grown into one of the largest wagon manufactories in South Africa and has brought considerable employment and prosperity to the village.

His election will come as little surprise to residents. Since August 1897, when he was chosen as Chairman of the Durbanville Village Management Board, Mr. King has taken a leading role in directing the affairs of the settlement. During his tenure the Board has overseen improvements to roads, public services, and local administration while preparing the village for the responsibilities of municipal government.

Speaking after his election, the newly chosen Mayor expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him by his fellow councillors and pledged to devote himself to the continued advancement of Durbanville. He observed that the town’s future prosperity would depend upon prudent administration, the encouragement of local industry, and the steady improvement of public works for the benefit of both townspeople and the surrounding farming community.

Among the projects expected to receive renewed attention under the new Council is the long-discussed improvement of transport connections between Durbanville and Cape Town. Mr. King has long advocated improved communication with neighbouring districts, believing that better transport infrastructure would strengthen both commerce and agriculture throughout the Tygerberg.

The establishment of the Municipality marks an important milestone in Durbanville’s progress. From its modest beginnings as a rural settlement serving travellers and farmers, the town has steadily developed into a thriving commercial centre whose industries and agricultural trade continue to expand.

In electing Mr. John King as its first Mayor, the Council has entrusted the leadership of the new municipality to a gentleman whose business experience, public service, and commitment to the welfare of the district have earned him the respect of the community. Many residents will look to his administration with confidence as Durbanville enters this new era of civic government.
