CAPE TOWN — Residents have until 10 June to comment on amendments to the City of Cape Town’s draft 2026/27 budget, after the metro confirmed changes following a recent court ruling on rates-linked tariffs. The city opened the public participation process today, with adjustments aimed at protecting lower- and middle-income households.
In a separate city development, Cape Town, Etana Energy and Growthpoint Properties announced what they describe as South Africa’s first pooled wheeling model for renewable electricity across multiple properties on the municipal grid. The initiative launched on the Foreshore and is intended to allow privately generated renewable power to be shared between buildings more efficiently.
Police activity in the northern suburbs also made headlines today. The Hawks confirmed the arrest of a 38-year-old foreign national in Milnerton during a human trafficking operation in Brooklyn. Three people were reportedly rescued during the raid.
On the cultural front, the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra announced a free public concert in Khayelitsha, bringing young musicians into the community as part of an outreach programme. The performance is scheduled for this week.
Cape Town’s event calendar is also filling up ahead of the weekend, with the Jive Funny Festival, the Good Life Show, and several live performances listed across the city from Thursday onward.
And in sport: the city is still reflecting on Sunday’s Cape Town Marathon, which drew roughly 27,000 runners. The race remains part of Cape Town’s push to become the first African city included in the World Marathon Majors series.
That’s Cape Town as of this afternoon — verified against currently published reports only.
